Simon Fraser University

SFU, in British Columbia, is named after a famous explorer and known for its pioneering spirit. It has been consistently ranked in the top three comprehensive universities in the country for twenty years.

The main campus is in the suburbs of Vancouver, but SFU wanted to offer mid-career university programs for professional development. To reach that audience, it was adding a location in the downtown core. An ad campaign was planned to promote the opening of the new building and the program it was to house. A transit shelter poster needed to link the historical context of exploration and discovery with this new venture.

We wrote the text, commissioned an original illustration, and designed the award-winning poster. The university was so taken with this marriage of words and image that it went on to print a limited edition to present to sponsors, and the full text was quoted verbatim in the Lieutenant Governor’s opening-day speech.
